There's been a discussion on the TechRhet listserv the last couple of days about USB flash drive web servers. I just tried one that was suggested, The Uniform Server, but could not get it to work when installed on my desktop. However, I was successful in downloading and installing XAMPP which is often mentioned by developers on drupal.org. Apparently the XAMPP lite version is good for flash drive use (the full version is rather large).
While messing with all of this, I also discovered the Portable Apps Suite which will install portable versions of the following open source programs to a flash drive:
- OpenOffice
- GAIM
- Thunderbird
- Firefox
- Nvu
- AbiWord
- Sunbird
- FileZilla
No chance to try this today. Just blogging it to make sure I get back to it later and hoping maybe someone else will experiment and get back to us first.
