Catch a Google Wave and you're sitting on top of the web

There's been a lot of talk lately about these new-fangled web 3.0 "do everything" type products...The latest is Google Wave. Charlie and I were discussing it; he thinks Google would have a Facebook killer if they integrated facebook functionality. However, I'm a bit dubious of the Wave. "You FOSS folks please finish this for us?" Hrm...Anyway, there is still some cool stuff to see here. I get giddy every time I think about a wiki that can update on a character level.

Lots of potential

What are your thoughts on using this to teach writing?

My university is poised to make a large-scale switch to the Google cloud, and some of the administrators are already experimenting with Google Docs for their end-of-year reports, but I've heard horror stories about the transition. (First hint -- break up large collaborative documents into sections, in order to reduce the chances of two people's changes locking each other out.)

Well, my biggest beef with Google Docs is that the "save as Word" feature is poor at best. It seems to wreck the formatting going up and coming back, which makes transitioning between the two programs a nightmare. Of course, that would be a moot point if you didn't care about Word. I'm not sure if similar problems exist when you try to export to other formats.
