One HeraldTribune.com article calls Ken Adelman's recently created site, the California Coastal Records Project, "one of the biggest technological advances ever for environmental activism." Over 10,000 digital pictures taken from a helicopter record the current state of the California coastline, allowing activists to alert Coastal Commission enforcement officers to property owners' violations of state law.
Some property rights advocates are actually worried about "vigilantes" using public information to force property owners to be environmentally-responsible. I think we need more ways to enable public pressure of this type.
I noticed their site claims to be made without the use of Microsoft products and to be powered by sunlight. I wish schools could claim so much.
