Linux on Mac

IBM has a white paper by David Mertz on running Linux on PowerPC machines (Apple). The paper notes PowerPC based computers "run Linux happily and well." It seems IBM is looking to develop just not its Linux-based software but its non-Intel hardware as well.

Mertz argues running Linux on PowerPC machines as well as x86 machines "assure[s] a uniform system/user interface across machines" for users that have a mix of hardware. The only problem I see with this is that there might be a reason why institutions have multiple hardware and software configurations is a response to user demand (ok, I'm not too sure anyone really "demands" Windows in the same way people "demand" Linux or Mac OSs).
