Scott mentioned this previously in this Kairosnews discussion thread, but it's definitely worth blogging about further. According to CNET, Microsoft has filed for patents to protect Word's XML format. Obviously, as Scott and the article note, this has serious long term consequences for open source word processors since the patents could make it illegal to convert a Word XML formatted document without licensing from Microsoft.
