OpenOffice to be 'true' Mac application

I've got a PowerMac G5 in my office now, so this is great news. MacWorld reports that the Aqua port of OpenOffice is soon to be released. Now Mac users will have little need to run any MS products on their machines.

great news

as a fellow mac user, all i can say is . . . finally! ;~)

Neo Office

In the meantime there already is an excellent port of open office called NeoOffice available for the Mac. My district is primarily Apple based and we have been testing Neo since last year. The newest version is quite good.

http://neooffice.org

"NeoOffice is a fully-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office."

PC OK, too

As a devoted PC afficionada of OpenOffice (yes, it's true, I will always yearn for XyWrite--has anyone written on the "first love" aspects of word processors?), I can say that if the mac version is anything close, you will be happy hacking honchos. Haven't encountered a file it won't open, OpenOffice, nor a file it corrupts upon saving. As Rabinovitz sez, paraphrased by Beckett critic C.J. Ackerley, " the satisfaction of a wish ends it, but for one wish satisfied ten are denied." Hope not for completion, hope only for the moderately intelligent program. In OO, you may have found it.

it will work as well

I'm using the X11 version and am very satisfied with it so far. I've only used it a little, but I can't tell any reall differences between it and the PC version (I've been using it for a few years), although I do understand that it doesn't integrate with the Mac desktop as well. For instance, I don't think you can associate the .doc file tag with it as the primary application for opening those files.
