CNET explains that Apple and Sun will be working together to release a version of Star Office for the Mac by the end of the year. Currently, OpenOffice does have a development version, but it's made to run on X11 instead of the Mac OSX Aqua Platform. The Sun/Apple cooperative would, instead, produce a java-based version of StarOffice, thus customizing it to run on the Mac desktop.
Imagine, a fully functionable office productivity suite which would run on almost any computer platform and offers compatability with Microsoft file formats. A good step, too, towards breaking Apple's dependency on Microsoft for major cross-platform desktop applications. Thanks to Mozilla 1.0's recent release, what exactly would Apple need from Microsoft anymore?

Re: Sun to push StarOffice for Apple's OS X
Isn't StarOffice the one that costs money?

Yep. But it's much cheaper than MS Office :)
