Working with the Collaborative Book

All registered members at Kairosnews can edit pages for the collaborative book "Do You Blog" here at Kairosnews. The wiki-like Drupal collaborative book feature allows users to add in new pages into the existing structure and edit existing pages. Note that the links which create the table of contents which appear on the right are generated by the site automatically; when Kairosnews members choose to create a new page or move a page within the structure, they merely select the parent page in the page edit/creation interface.

Like the blogs posted to the Kairosnews home page, collaborative book pages can contain plain text, HTML, and to some degree, a combination of both. If you are having difficulty working with an existing page because it is HTML-formatted, Kairosnews editors suggest that you add your revision to the page as a comment; editors or some other site member can then go in and add your work in HTML format.

Editing Existing Pages

When logged in, you'll find an "edit" tab at the top of every sub page in "Do You Blog" (only site editors can edit the main title page). This will allow you to

  • Change the title of the page.
  • Select the parent for the page in the book structure.
  • Change the text in the body of the page.
  • Add a tag for the page.
  • Add a log message describing your revisions of the page. This optional message will be visible to Kairosnews editors and site administrators and is a convient way of describing updates. However, you need not fill out this field.

Creating a New Book Page

Via the "create content" link available in the right hand menu, logged in members will find a link to create new book pages on the site. The input interface will be much the same as that when editing a page, so you might choose to view an existing page using the "edit this page" link first to see how creating a page translates into a new page within the book.

Choosing the Page Placement in the Book Structure

When creating or editing a page, you have some control over where the book page is placed within the book structure using the "Parent" selection field. This will allow you to choose at what level of the hierarchy the book is placed within the text. But it will not allow you to choose how it is ordered within that level of the hierarchy. Add a comment to the page when editing or creating a page or contact a Kairosnews editor as to where you want the page to be included, and Kairosnews editors can use a special administration option to order the page correctly within the book structure.

This is interesting - Users of Kairosnews can add and edit the collaborative book - Do You Blog? Weblogs for Educators. I have been scratching around Wikis as I like the ideals behind collaborative work. Team work is not something that a person like myself is trained in. I come from a visual arts background which of course has a history of celebrating the contribution of the individual artist. I am now in an academic institution both studying and teaching and I have discovered that many academics are equally protective of their individual voice. So a thrill runs up my...
